Engineering HDR Seminar Series 10, 2011: Thermal Performance of Natural and Forced Convection Heat Pipe Solar Water Heaters

The performances of two heat pipe solar water heaters under natural and force convection were tested side-by-side to determine the following:

(1) The maximum average hot water storage temperature that could be achieved without water draw-off.(2) The overnight water temperature drop in the storage tank.

(3) The expected end-of-day water temperature and mean system efficiency with complete drain down (draw-off) in the evening.

The results showed that the natural convection system performed better than the forced convection one in terms of higher temperature that could be achieved, up to 100oC

About the Speaker

Mr Tong graduated with a 1st Class Hons in Mechanical Engineering from MUSC. He is currently registered  as a HDR student in MUSC. His thesis topic is on “High temperature solar water heating”. This talk is based on a paper presentation made at the AAEC2011 Conference held in Kuching, Sarawak recently.
