Engineering HDR Seminar Series 8, 2012: Robot Assisted Weed Classification and Irrigation Management

Mr Foo Jin Hang, RAM postgraduate student

Date: 2012-05-08
Time: 15:00 to 16:00
Venue: Classroom 9-3-04

Every year, oil palm plantation uses massive amount of herbicides to control weed spread in the plantation. Up till today, the commonly used technique to apply herbicides in an oil palm plantation is through ‘blanket spraying’ the whole field with herbicides without taking into account of presence of weeds in the field. This practice is uneconomical and damaging towards the environment. The long term exposure towards herbicides also causes hazard to human health. Therefore the aim of this research is to create a novel method to classify weeds in an oil palm plantation and create a new automated weeding machine to replace humans in applying herbicides in plantations.

About the Speaker

Mr Foo graduated with Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics Engineering with Honours) from Monash University Sunway Campus in 2010. He joined Monash University in 2011 for postgraduate studies under the supervision of Dr. Parasuraman, Dr. Edwin Tan Chee Pin and Mr. Khoo Boon How. His research focus is on weed identification and classification in an oil palm plantation in order to reduce the wastage of herbicides. The present studies show promising results to reduce pollution from herbicides through selective weeding process.
