The talk will introduce Brno, Czech Republic, Brno University of Technology, Faculty of information technology, and the Graph@FIT research group. The group is mainly focused on image/video analysis algorithms, signal processing algorithms, and applications exploiting embedded systems. BUT has long-term activities that include research in the field of hardware accelerated functionality for embedded systems, specifically in the form of embedded video/signal processing modules. Project activities of BUT include several EU funded projects in the field of signal and video processing. Overview of the research topics and research projects will be presented. Then the talk will focus at image and video processing methods connected with human machine interaction and understanding of the human activities by computers, such as object recognition based on machine learning, gesture recognition based on time-space features, and also about embedded implementation of the algorithms. About the Speaker

Pavel Zemcik (Doc. Dr. Ing.) was born in 1965 in Brno, Czech Republic. He received electrical, electronics, and computer engineering education at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, BUT Brno (Ing. 1989). After an employment at the Research Institute of Mathematical Machines, Brno, he continued the studies and received Ph.D. degree from BUT Brno with the Ph.D. thesis titled Realistic rendering (1995). He spent significant part of his professional life abroad at the University of Bristol, UK (6 months), Ascom Radiocom, Camberley, UK (2 months), University of Surrey, UK, Guildford (5 months), Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland (total 6 months), and PennState, Erie, PA, USA (6 months). Pavel Zemcik published over 60 conference papers, 10 journal papers, and 3 book chapters, participated in over 15 research projects with both local and EU funding, co-authored 3 patents, acted member of conference programme committees, etc. See (
