Abstract

This presentation gives an overview on research activities in Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (MVPR) in Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT), Finland. The goal of MVPR is to perform high quality research on computational vision and modeling, machine learning, and pattern recognition. The laboratory also serves the industry as an expert organization, performs applied research, and educates experts in its own area. The research interests of the Laboratory include visual inspection in the industry, computational vision, medical imaging and processing, and biosensors. The presentation introduces the main research areas, focusing on visual inspection, especially on machine vision based quality control from pulping to papermaking for printing.

About the Speaker

Professor Heikki Kalviainen has been a Professor of Computer Science in Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) in Finland since 1999. He received his M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Technology) in Computer Science in 1989 and 1994, respectively, from Department of Information Technology in LUT. Professor Kalviainen has served in many academic leader positions, including those as Vice Dean and Head of Department/Degree Program/Laboratory in LUT and Director of East Finland Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering (ECSE). He has been a Visiting Professor at Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia (DCGM) in Brno University of Technology in 2012, at the Center for Machine Perception (CMP) in Czech Technical University in Czech Republic in 2011-2012, and at Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Provessing (CVSSP) in University of Surrey in the U.K. in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004. Professor Kalviainen has supervised 19 doctoral and 123 master's theses, has written 162 peer-reviewed scientific articles (journal articles, conference papers and book chapters), and 53 other research publications, and has been a responsible leader in 43 research projects (total 4.1 MEUR). His primary research interests include machine vision, pattern recognition, and image processing and analysis. Professor Kalviainen is an Associate Editor of Machine Vision and Applications and he belongs to the governing board of IAPR, being also a senior member of IEEE, and a member of ACM and SPIE.
