Seminar Series 8/2009 (IEEE I&M): Networking a Glacier

Dr Royan Ong, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, School of Engineering

Date: 2009-05-20
Time: 15:00 to 16:00
Venue: 9-3-06, Building 9, Level 3

Like a canary in the coal mine, glaciers are considered the barometer of Global Warming, due to their acute susceptibility to temperature fluctuations. It has been hypothesized that basal glacial sliding accounts for up to 90% of glacial movements. Up till now, it was not possible to accurately measure basal sliding due to the inaccessibility of the region in interest. This talk focuses on the development and deployment of GLACSWEB, a unique Wireless Sensor Network system to measure basal glacial sliding; the challenges involved, and the outcomes achieved.
