Seminar Series 16/2009: Photonics: Introduction of the Science and Engineering of Light

Dr Raymond Ooi

Date: 2009-10-23
Time: 13:10 to 14:10
Venue: 9307

Photonics is a rapidly advancing field that has applications in many areas of science and technology and will have major impact on improving quality of lives. It is based on the physics and devices of optics, electromagnetism and quantum physics. I will give an introduction of this promising field and some exciting developments.

About the Speaker

Dr. Raymond Ooi obtained his doctorate degree from Universitaet Konstanz, Germany in quantum optics. He then worked with Prof. Marlan O. Scully (a distinguish physicist in laser and quantum physics) at Texas A&M University and Princeton University as a Research Associate. He was also a Visiting Scientist at Max-Planck Institut fuer Quantenoptik,  a Research Professor at KAIST and an Assistant Professor at Korea University. His research covers quantum optics, nonlinear molecular spectroscopy and quantum microscopy, statistical physics of Bose-Einstein condensates, laser-matter interactions and electromagnetic field scattering. His research interests include nonlinear photonics, quantum effects in artificial optical structures, quantum communications, interactions and propagation of intense and nonclassical laser fields.
