Spinal pain is a serious problem throughout the world with millions of working days lost.  In recent years a whole range of new spinal implants have been developed to replace the intervertebral disc and maintain spinal motion.  This talk will cover the various designs of disc replacement implants and discuss the essential pre-clinical mechanical testing required.

About the Speaker

Dr Duncan Shepherd is a Senior Lecturer in Bio-medical Engineering at the University of Birmingham.  He is a Chartered Engineering and a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.  His main research interests are on the design and testing of implantable medical devices, which includes work on: spinal implants; joint replacement implants for the fingers and wrist; fracture fixation devices; surgical instruments.  He has published around 50 peer reviewed journal papers.
