The Faculty of Engineering awards its degrees with honours for meritorious performance in all undergraduate four, five and six year single and double degrees. An additional honours year is not required.

Engineering programs awarded with honours

The faculty awards honours only for the engineering component of a double degree. Any queries relating to honours for the non-engineering component of a double degree (if applicable) should be directed to the relevant partner faculty.

Engineering honours grades

Honours grade name Honours grade Honours weighted average
First class honours HI ≥ 75.00%
Second class honours (Division A) HIIA ≥ 70.00%
Second class honours (Division B) HIIB ≥ 65.00%

Students achieving an honours weighted average mark less than 65.00 are awarded a Pass (P) grade degree.

The three years Bachelor of Technology (Infrastructure - Design, Construction and Management) is not awarded with honours.

Publication of honours

A list of students graduating 'with honours' is published in the graduation booklet and the receipt of a degree 'with honours' is also published on the student's testamur. A student's individual honours grade (not the mark) is printed on the academic transcript.

Calculating the honours weighted average

The honours weighted average (HWA) formula includes a weighting for each unit. A level one unit is weighted by a factor of one, a level two unit is weighted by a factor of two, a level three unit is weighted by a factor of three and a level four unit is weighted by a factor of four. The level of a unit is determined by the first number of the numerical component of the unit code eg ABC3000 would be weighted by a factor of three, irrespective of whether it was studied at second year, third year, fourth year etc.

Any result obtained after repeating a unit is normally reduced by 10% before being weighted.
