Students admitted to the Master of Engineering Science (Research) degree may be allowed to transfer to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree within 10-12 months of commencement via a transfer exam.
Students admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree will have to undergo a confirmation exam within 10-12 months of candidature.
Research interests can be very diverse and hence, prospective applicants are advised to contact the School of Engineering directly to discuss if supervision and facilities are available to support the chosen area of research.
Master of Engineering Science (Research)

This degree by major thesis is intended to provide a candidate with basic training in the methodology of research, and to gain in-depth insight into an important topic of current Engineering interest.
Prospective students should talk to potential supervisors about possible research topics and explore areas of interest. Although not essential, most people embarking on a research degree already have a preference for a particular area of research arising from personal interests. Supervision in the areas of Physics and Mathematics for Master of Science (Research) and PhD is also available through the School of Engineering. The normal length of candidature is 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time).
A limited number of scholarships are available for applicants with a First Class Honours Degree (H1). Scholarships will be given based on academic records and the area of research interest. Scholarships are only available for full time research and can be applied at anytime upon the confirmation of the candidature.
PhD candidates are required to carry out an independent program of research under the supervision of an experienced member of the School's academic staff. The maximum period of candidature is 4 years (full-time) or 8 years (part-time).
